Dr. Mark Kardenes was the first Fredonia State student-athlete to earn seven varsity letters during an outstanding career in men's basketball and baseball. He earned four letters in basketball and three in baseball and was instrumental in the formation of the first baseball team at Fredonia State in 1951, of which he was a member. A two-time captain of both the basketball and baseball teams, Mr. Kardenes consistently scored in double figures on the basketball court and was one of the baseball team's most successful hitters. He graduated from Fredonia State in 1953 with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education/History and added a master's degrees from Hofstra University in 1957 and the University of Southern California in 1969 and a doctorate from the University of Virginia in 1971. He retired as assistant superintendent and human resources director from the Santa Monica-Malibu United School District in Santa Monica, Calif.
