One of the best pitchers ever to wear a Fredonia State uniform, Jeff Shaver still held records for innings pitched and strikeouts some 10 years after his graduation. A fierce competitor who refused to let injury or pain sideline him, Mr. Shaver had an impressive career record of 17-9. As the Devils' No. 1 starting pitcher, he threw against the toughest competition. He pitched a no-hitter against Penn State Behrend and during the 1982–83 season and went 6-1 with a 2.72 ERA during 1983-84. He was a three-time letterman and recorded 178 strikeouts in 179 innings pitched. At the end of his senior year, he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics and had a successful six-year career with a number of Oakland affiliates. He is the only Fredonia State graduate to reach the major leagues. In addition to an outstanding baseball career at Fredonia State, Mr. Shaver also played guard on the 1984-85 Blue Devil basketball team which captured the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Upstate tournament championship. He received a bachelor's degree in Marketing Management and was working as an independent investor in Scottsdale, Ariz., at the time of his induction.
