The following information was taken from the Hall of Fame program published at the time of induction. Some editing was required:

John Chapin was a member of the Inaugural Class inducted into the Fredonia State Athletics Hall of Fame. The ceremony was held Sat., Sept. 27, 1986, at the Topiary Tree in the Campus Center.

Mr. Chapin was recognized as one of the greatest swimmers in Blue Devil annals. He was undefeated in the backstroke during his four-year stay. He captured seven SUNYAC titles and earned All-America honors in 1968. He held the Fredonia State 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke records at the time of his induction, a period spanning 18 years.

A 1970 graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, Mr. Chapin was serving as vice president for information services for Telemarketing Corp. of America at the time of his induction. He also held a Master's of Science in Computer Science from Pratt Institute (1972) and a Master of Science in Industrial Management from SUNY Stony Brook (1982).
