A versatile athlete and three-sport standout, Edward Koenig played baseball, men's basketball, and men's soccer at Fredonia State. As a second baseman, he set a fielding average record of .991 in 1963 that stood at the time of his 1991 induction, some 28 years later. His batting average of .360 in 1961 ranked among the school's very best hitters. He earned four varsity letters in the sport. It was on the soccer field, however, where Mr. Koenig excelled. As a member of the college's first men's soccer team, it was his play in goal that kept the Blue Devils respectable during that inaugural season. That team was inducted into the Fredonia State Hall of Fame as a Team of Distinction at the 2018 dinner. Over his four-year career at Fredonia State, Mr. Koenig made an incredible 524 saves, including 34 in one game. One of the best ever to play in goal at the school, he was named to the SUNYAC all-conference team and to the All New York State soccer team his senior season of 1962. He earned a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education in 1963 and worked as a teacher and educator in the Brentwood public schools in Sayville, N.Y., at the time of his induction.
