A versatile swimmer, Shawn Erb set school records in six different events: the 50-yard freestyle, the 100 free, the 100 butterfly, the 200 free relay, the 400 medley relay, and the 400 free relay. Mr. Erb led the team in points scored for three of the four years in which he competed. As a freshman at his first SUNYAC meet, his first-place time as part of the 800 free relay set a conference and pool record and qualified him for nationals, where he and his teammates finished ninth and earned All-American honorable mention recognition. As a sophomore, he earned two firsts, three seconds, and a third at the SUNYAC meet. Of the six first-place finishes he earned as a junior at the SUNYAC meet, his time in the 100 butterfly set a pool, conference meet, and school record and qualified him once again for nationals, where he finished 13th and earned his second All-America honorable mention in the 100 free. Another half-dozen firsts at the SUNYAC meet his senior year included a conference meet/pool record/NCAA qualifying time in the 50 free. Finishing eighth in the nation earned Erb the title of All-America. Innately talented academically, he was selected as the 1989 SUNYAC Scholar-Athlete and also received the Morris Poumitt Music/Athlete Award that year. He was also a team captain as a senior. His bachelor's degree in Music Education was conferred in 1990. He also earned a master's in Church Leadership/Christian Education in 1994 from the Easter Mennonite Seminary. Mr. Erb was serving as a youth minister at the Neffsville Mennonite Church in Lancaster, Pa., at the time of his induction.
