A four-year letterman at Fredonia State, Killian was an outstanding breaststroker on the men's swimming and diving team. Voted Most Valuable Swimmer his freshman year, Mr. Killian was undefeated in dual meet competition in the 200-yard breaststroke and competed in the NAIA championships in both the 100- and the 200-yard breaststroke as a yearling. He once had a streak of 14 straight dual meet wins in the 200-yard breaststroke. A two-time captain (1967-68 and 1968-69), he went on to capture three gold, five silver, and two bronze medals in SUNYAC championship competition during his collegiate career. He was the SUNYAC champ in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1969 and 1970 and a member of the 400-yard medley relay which won a SUNYAC title in 1969. In addition to setting several state conference records, Mr. Killian qualified for and competed in three NAIA national championship meets and finished as high as seventh nationally in one of his events. He was named Fredonia State's Outstanding Athlete in 1969 and graduated in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in Biology. He later earned a master's in Health Administration in 1981 from the University of Health Sciences / The Chicago Medical Society. At the time of his induction in 1990, he was a hospital administrator at Lake Forest (Ill.) Hospital.
