BOXSCORE ERIE, P.A. -- The Fredonia State men's soccer team opened up their season against Franciscan University on Saturday evening. It was a close contest, but the Devils were unable to pull off the win, falling 2-1 to the Barons.

Jacob Gennaro scored Fredonia State's lone goal in the 47th minute to bring the game within 1 goal. He was assisted by sophomore, Jake Murray.

Franciscan got onto the board with a goal by Liam Nagle, Assist by Mikey Irvin and Nick Miller, at the 16.59 mark of the first half. The Barons then got the game winning goal within the 39th minute, by Lucas Cross and assisted by Nick Miller. Both of Franciscans goals came off of corner kicks.

Fredonia State oushot the Barons, 11-6, and had an 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.

William Richardson (Penfield, N.Y. / Penfield) made one save for Fredonia State.

Coach Pj Gondek had some words to say after the game, "Poor start to todays game for us. Two corner kick goals were gifted to them. We did respond well with solid possession and attack. The early goal gave us energy, but we were just not able to tie it even with a free shot in the box, with just seconds to play. Lots of young players played their first college soccer game and they are all very impressive. We need to rebound tomorrow against Wooster."

The Devils continue their season tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. against Wooster.
