Devils to visit Oneonta for SUNYAC semifinal

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Coming off a stirring shootout victory in its first-round game, the Fredonia men's soccer team will look to extend its post-season run Wednesday afternoon at Oneonta in the semifinals of the SUNYAC Tournament.

Game time is 1 p.m. with the winner moving on to the championship game 1 p.m. Saturday against either Buffalo State or Cortland. Those two teams meet in Wednesday's other semifinal 1 p.m. at Cortland.

The Blue Devils (11-6-2) advanced to their semifinal by turning back Plattsburgh, 5-4, in six shootout rounds last Saturday at University Stadium. Oneonta (13-5-1) got this far by earning the No. 2 seed in the six-team tournament and drawing a first-round bye.

"It's been a pretty exciting couple of weeks," said Fredonia Head Coach P.J. Gondek. "I think we all just want to keep riding the wave."

When the teams met Oct. 22 at Oneonta, the Blue Devils needed the win to make the tournament field. Goals by Ryan Ross (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) and Bryan Sibble (Liverpool, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) in a span of six minutes early in the second half broke a scoreless tie. The Red Dragons cut the margin in half on a goal by Dillon Johnson in the 71st minute, then Fredonia freshman goalkeeper Ty Bentham (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) did the rest in a 2-1 Fredonia win. He finished with eight saves. The Blue Devils were outshot 23-9 overall.

"Oneonta remains," Gondek said, "the most talented team in our league but I don't get the sense that that matters all the much to this group of guys. I expect us to compete well as we understand what is at stake -- a chance at a SUNYAC championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament."

The Red Dragons are No. 3 and the Blue Devils are No. 9 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America East Region rankings released Tuesday.
