BOXSCORE 1 | BOXSCORE 2 FLORIDA -- Matt Wojcik's base hit drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh and freshman Morgan Zientara tossed a complete-game, two hitter over Lakeland in Game 2 to give the Fredonia State baseball team the sweep. The Devils dropped the Muskies, 13-8, in Game 1.


Game 1
Freshman Nick Syposs earned his first collegiate win and the Blue Devil offense put up 10 hits in the 13-8 win.

Syposs went five strong, giving up four runs, but just one earned. Michael Byrns threw the final two, striking out three to give the team 10 punchouts for the seven-inning game.

After a leadoff triple to start the game, Lakeland scored in the first, but the Devils responded with a pair in the bottom of the inning, then four more in the second to go up 6-1.

In the second, a single by Alex Gannon and a walk to Mario Williams was followed by a two-run double by Garrett Stuckey.

In the third, a one-out hit by pitch to Brady Ventura followed by a Gannon single set the table. A fielder's choice and another hit batter loaded the bases. Ethan Behnke doubled in three runs, then came home on a Jake Wentland single.

Lakeland used a two-out single and double to plate its second run, making it a 6-2 Blue Devil advantage.

The Devils stretched the lead to 9-2 with a three-run fourth. A walk to Gannon and single by Williams led off the inning. After a pair of wild pitches, Gannon scored and Williams stood at third. Stuckey drove him home with a base hit. Behnke flew out on a shot to deep center before Wentland singled to put runners at the corners. A sacrifice fly by Matt Wojcik brought in the third run.

In the top of the fifth, a bases-loaded error brought in two unearned runs for Lakeland. Syposs got the final out of the fifth on a pop up to center, ending his day.

Fredonia State tacked on four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. A Williams double, walk to Stuckey, and an hit by pitch to Behnke loaded the bases. A wild pitch plated Williams. Wentland then walked, followed by a sacrifice fly by Wojcik to put the Devils up 11-4. Tucker Schwab singled home a run in his first collegiate at bat, and Nick Barberio grounded out to plate the final run.

Lakeland saw the first five batters reach base in the top of the seventh and would push across four runs to give the 13-8 final.

Williams scored four times, going 2-3 with a walk. Gannon, Stuckey, and Wentland all added two hits apiece. Behnke and Stuckey drive in three runs, and Wojcik had two RBI.

Game 2
Game 2 proved to be a pitchers' duel. Lakeland's Kyle Gould was able to keep the Devils' off the board until the seventh inning.

Wentland came through with a pinch hit single. Alex Gannon's sacrifice bunt attempt turned into a two-base error, putting runners at second and third. After a Lakeland pitching change, Williams lifted a fly ball to sacrifice home the tying run.

With Gannon at third, Schwab worked a walk on a ten-pitch at bat to put runners at the corners. Wojcik then gave the Devils the lead for the first time in the game, ripping a base hit to centerfield.

Zientara allowed his only walk to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but was able to slam the door for the victory. He struck out five, walked one while giving up just two hits.

The Devils also turned in several defensive gems. Kyle Tedford -- who led the team with two hits -- made a diving stop at second base. Wojcik had an outfield assist at third to end the fourth, then ended the fifth with a diving catch.

In addition to Tedford, Wojcik had to hits.

The Devils are now 2-3. They are off tomorrow, then take on Bowdoin in a doubleheader beginning 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
