BOXSCORE 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Th Fredonia State baseball team improved to 3-0 with a doubleheader sweep of SUNY Purchase on Saturday. The Devils won 6-1 and 10-5.
Game 1 - BOX SCORE
The story of Game 1 was senior pitcher
Kevin Mahon. The righty yielded only one hit -- a leadoff single in the second inning -- and went the distance to collect the win. He struck out eight and walked one. He gave up just one run in the seventh after three straight errors.
The offense backed him with a 12-hit attack.
The Devils scored three times in the fourth and three times in the seventh.
In the fourth, a
Tylor Murphy triple scored
Tyler Phillips, who walked. Patrick Bigham tripled in the next at bat to make it 2-0. A single by
Ryan Hann made it 3-0.
In the seventh, Anthony Kinney led off with a base hit. Pinch runner Sherburnie Jonis stole second, tagged up to third, and scored on a wild pitch.
Phllips then singled and stole second. He would score on a double by Murphy. A Bigham double drove in the third run of the inning, making it 6-0.
In the bottom of the seventh, Mahon induce a flyout to start the frame. After the three miscues, Mahon induce a couple of weak grounders to end the game.
Murphy had three hits, and Bigham Hann and Phillips had two apiece.
Game 2
The second game did not start well for the Blue Devils. The first five Panthers reached base, chasing starting pitcher Nate Lockwood.
Andrew O'Connor entered to limit the damage, and the inning ended with the Devils in a 3-0 hole.
O'Connor would end up tossing three innings without allowing any runs as the Devils got back into the game. He vultured the win.
The bottom of the first saw the Devils tie the game. Genau and Kinney singled to start the inning. Phillips hit a sac fly to plate Genau. Murphy reached on a fielder's choice, and he and Kinney would score on
Luke Kenyon's double. Kenyon would get thrown out at third on the play.
Tyler Phillips homered with one out in the third to give the Devils the lead for good. They would tack on three more in the fifth and three in the sixth to put the game away.
Phillips ripped a two-out, bases-loaded double to plate all three in the fourth.
Kenyon would be in the middle of the fifth-inning rally, starting things with a triple. Hann drove him in on a base hit. Kinney capped the scoring with a two-run single.
Fredonia High grad
Derrick Walters would toss three innings of relief, giving up a pair of runs.
Ryan Howard pitched a 1-2-3 seventh take end the game.
Phillips (homerun and double), Genau, Kinney, Kenyon (double and triple), and
Ethan Blaisdell (double) all finished with two hits apiece. Genau scored three times.
The Devils finish the weekend trip with a 9 a.m. contest vs. Rivier on Sunday.
