Dragons take two

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- In a matchup of the two SUNYAC-leading teams, the Cortland Red Dragons swept Fredonia 9-0 and 7-2 on Saturday afternoon at Ludwig Field. The Dragons improve to 8-0, while the Devils drop to 6-2 in the conference.

Game 1 stayed close until the seventh. With Cortland up 4-0, the Dragons tacked on four more runs to put the game away. They added an eight-inning insurance run as well.

Patrick Bigham had two of the Devils' six hits. 

Zach Durant (5-2) picked up the win with 5 1/3 scoreless innings.

Luke Kucewski took the loss for the Devils, allowing eight runs, four of which were earned, over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and scattered 10 hits. He also allowed four walks and three hit batters. A.J. Kinney tossed 1 1/3 innings, allowing an unearned run. Chris Kuchta pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Game 2 stayed close until the sixth. With Cortland nursing a 4-2 lead, the Dragons tacked on three runs in the sixth to put away the seven-inning affair.

Bigham added two more hits, and Domenic Monti also had a pair of safeties. Kevin Yirinec hit his fifth homerun of the season in the fourth to start the scoring for the Devils.

Sam Cestra (2-2) took the loss, allowing seven hits over 5 1/2 innings. He was plagued by four defensive miscues, giving up six runs, with just one being earned.

Matt Valin improved to 4-0 for Cortland, tossing the first two innings. Isaiah Hudson gave up both runs in 2 1/3 innings of work, while Chris Puzakulics picked up the save with 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Scott Giordano homered for the visitors.

The three-game set concludes on Sunday with an 11 a.m. game.
