Lions retain the Cup

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Devils dropped their home opener, 7-5, to the Penn State Behrend Lions on Wednesday. The Lions retain possession of the I-90 Cup with the victory.

Fredonia had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth before a strikeout ended the game.

Behrend jumped out to a 3-run lead after two innings. A two-run homerun by Fredonia's Jon Morrison in the bottom of the fourth made it a 3-2 game. 

Behrend responded with two runs in the fifth, and one in the sixth to extend its lead to 6-2.One more run in the ninth made it 7-2.

Pinch hitter Tyler Phillips led off the ninth with a base hit for the Devils. Ryan Hann followed with a single. After a pop out, Trevor Bradshaw ripped his second double of the game to plate Fredonia's third run. A wild pitch and an infield error brought in two more runs to make it 7-5.

Bradshaw, Morrison, Nicolas Fiore, and Patrick Bigham each had a pair of hits for Fredonia. The Devils outhit Behrend, 11-9, but were hurt by five errors.

The Devils used six pitchers in a tuneup for its upcoming conference weekend. Luke Kuczewski took the loss, giving up one unearned run in the first. Sam Cestra pitched two scoreless innings, and Billy Sanborn gave up one unearned run over three innings. William Clifford, Nick Lawlor, and Tylor Murphy each tossed one inning.

Eric Mikulan earned the win for Behrend (12-6) going six innings.

Fredonia takes on Cortland on Saturday and Sunday. The series was bumped back one day due to some predicted unruly weather.
