Walk-off win keeps playoff chances alive

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Fredonia rallied for four runs in the last of the seventh inning in the first game of its SUNYAC softball doubleheader split Sunday vs. Oneonta.

Blue Devil senior Rhianna Paoletti rapped a bases-loaded single to complete the comeback and secure a 6-5 Fredonia win. Oneonta won the nightcap, 8-0.

It was Fredonia's the third walk-off win of the season, and the second of the weekend. Previous walk-offs came March 11 over Ursinus and Saturday over New Paltz. The Blue Devils have also staged two other late-game rallies, April 6 vs. Brockport and April 13 at Plattsburgh, the latter coming after trailing 8-1 in the first inning and 9-2 after two innings.

The late-inning dramatics this weekend kept the Blue Devils (13-21 overall, 8-10 SUNYAC) alive for the sixth and final SUNYAC playoff berth. Plattsburgh, which has a doubleheader Monday at Brockport, can also claim the last spot.

GAME ONE
  • Doubles by Oneonta's Brooke Corbett figured in her team's first three runs – as well as their fifth run. Her double in the second inning preceded a two-run single by Amanda Sexton. Corbett led off the fourth inning with her second double and scored on a single by Dana Del Genio to give the Red Dragons a 3-0 lead.
  • Fredona broke through with two runs the last of the fourth. Two walks and a bunt single by Maddy O'Heir loaded the bases. Cassie Herman singled to right for the first run. Alyssa Piniewski grounded out but brought in the second run. The threat ended when the Blue Devils ran into an inning-ending double play on a flyball to left.
  • Oneonta added a run in the sixth with the help of a Fredonia error, followed by sacrifice fly by Lauren Sabatino. Corbett then brought in the fifth run with a two-out double in the top of the seventh.
  • Fredonia's game winning rally started with a single by Karli Murray, followed by an Oneonta error. Katie Yudin singled in the first run and Nicole Kumro doubled in the second. A third run scored on the play when the Oneonta left-fielder overran the ball hit by Kumro. A single by O'Heir and a walk to Megan Maull preceded Paoletti's game-winning hit, a one-strike smash to deep left.
GAME TWO
  • Oneonta scored four unearned runs in the top of the third off Sam Seegar. Sabatino had a two-run single, followed by consecutive RBI singles by Madison Capozucca and Megan Palmatier. Palmatier's hit chased Seegar in favor of Yudin.
  • Oneonta tacked on four runs in the top of the seventh on six hits and one costly error. Three different Red Dragons had RBI in the inning, with Palmatier picking up her second of the game.
  • Alyssa Piniewski had two of Fredonia's three hits off Oneonta's Julia Calabro.
WHAT'S NEXT?
  • Scoreboard watching for the Blue Devils on Monday. Two Plattsburgh losses at Brockport will secure Fredonia's playoff spot. Two Plattsburgh wins and the Cardinals get in. A Plattsburgh split triggers a series of tiebreakers too numerous to mention.
