Cortland right-hander Sam Van Dorn limited the Blue Devils (13-22) to three hits, two by freshman lead-off hitter
Karli Murray.
Eva FitzSimmons had Fredonia's other hit.
The Blue Devils are back in action later Thursday when they meet the loser of Thursday's second game between #5 Oswego and #2 Geneseo. Scheduled game-time is 3 p.m. yet likely will start later than that.
Cortland improved to 25-13 with the win Thursday morning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Murray led off the game with a single the middle. After she was put out on a fielder's choice, Katie Yudin assumed her place and reached second with two outs, but was stranded.
- FitzSimmons led off the second with a single through the middle, went to second on a Maddy O'Heir's sacrifice bunt, but remained there.
- Murray had a single in the third with one out but did not advance.
- Cortland put runners on second and third with one out in the third before a double play ended the threat – a grounder to Murray at short, who threw to catcher FitzSimmons to get the second out at home, followed by a rundown between second and third to retire the side.
- Cortland loaded the bases with one out in the fifth and appeared to score on a short fly to left fielder Jules Vassallo, yet the runner on third was ruled out at third on appeal for leaving the base too early.
- The Red Dragons broke through in the fifth inning. With two outs and runners on first and second, Taylor Felicello blooped a single to center to score the game's first run. After a walk loaded the bases, Skyler Hoyt doubled to left to make it 3-0 and chase Seegar and bring on Yudin to pitch. An infield error plated the fourth Cortland run.
- Kelly O'Gorman's three-run homer in the sixth completed the scoring for Cortland.
