CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Fredonia was eliminated from the SUNYAC Softball Tournament with a 4-3 loss to Oswego on Thursday.
The Lakers (18-20) rallied for three runs in the last of the sixth to erase a 3-1 Fredonia lead. A double by pinch-hitter Claire Hewitt plated the winning run.
Blue Devil junior
Katie Yudin took the loss in relief of starter
Sam Seegar. Oswego left-hander Brianna Harrington was the winning pitcher. Angela Frampton got the final two outs to pick up a save.
Alyssa Piniewski had two of Fredonia's six hits. The Blue Devils (13-23) left five runners stranded.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Seegar pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the last of the first inning.
- Fredonia threatened in the second inning. Eva FitzSimmons led off the inning with double to left. She went to second on an infield groundout, but remained at third when the next two batters were retired.
- A homer by Taylor DuBois leading off the last of the second put Oswego on top, 1-0.
- The Blue Devils took a 3-1 lead in the third inning. Back-to-back singles by Alyssa Piniewski and Karli Murray got the rally started. Both of them scored when Amber Piniewski's sacrifice bunt was thrown into the rightfield for a three-base error. The third run scored when a ball to right by FitzSimmons was misjudged.
- Seegar pitched around a one-out double in the last of the fifth.
- Oswego took a 4-3 lead in the last of the sixth. Yudin relieved Seeger in the last of the sixth with one out after back-to-back put Oswego runners on first and second. Yudin induced a groundout for the second out before Zoe Mennig blooped a single into short left to score two runs. Hewitt followed with her game-winning hit down the right-field line.
- Megan Maull had a pinch-hit single in the Fredonia seventh. Alyssa Piniewski re-entered the game and advanced to second on a wild pitch, which brought Angela Frampton on in relief of Harrington. Frampton got the final two outs as Oswego won and advanced to Friday's round of games.
