Blue Devils drop a pair at Legends Way

CLERMONT, Fla. – Fredonia's defense unraveled in its first game and the bats fell silent in its second game Wednesday, resulting in a pair of losses at The Spring Games.

Five errors led to four unearned runs in a 4-2 loss to Lasell. The Blue Devils (3-7) then managed only three hits while falling to Lake Forest, 3-0. Both games were played at the Legends Way Complex.

Making her first collegiate start in the pitching circle, Maria Caviris took the loss in the opener despite pitching a three-hitter. Sam Seegar took the loss in Game 2 while pitching a seven-hitter with six strikeouts.

Maddy O'Heir had one hit in each game for Fredonia.

The Devils in the Details:

GAME ONE
  • Fredonia went up 1-0 in the top of the second on a lead-off double to left by Cassie Herman and a single to right by Amber Piniewski. Herman stopped at third, then scored when Piniewski got caught in a rundown between first and second.
  • Three Fredonia errors led to two Lasell runs in the last of the second. Two more errors led to two more runs in the third as Lasell took a 4-1 lead.
  • Fredonia made it 4-2 in the fifth. Sydney Merkey lined a two-out double into the gap in left-center and scored on a single past third by Alyssa Piniewski.
GAME TWO
  • Lake Forest wasted no time taking a 1-0 lead. Their first hitter, Maria Zepeda, lined a triple to deep left and scored when the next batter, Alyssa Grimm, bounced out to second. It was the the first of three hits for Zepeda.
  • Zepeda hit a two-run homer in her second at-bat to give Lake Forest a 3-0 lead. Her long fly to the gap in deep left-center glanced off the glove of Fredonia center fielder Jules Vassallo and rolled to the fence.
  • Lake Forest put runners on second and third with no outs in the fourth, and second and third with one out in the fifth, but did not score.
