Devils down Wis.-Superior, Pitt.-Greensburg

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Sam Seegar pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts as Fredonia completed its first Florida sweep in two years, defeating Pitt.-Greensburg 5-0 after dropping Wisconsin-Superior 10-1 earlier in the day. Both games were played at the Osceola Sports Complex.

Seegar's shutout lowered her earned run average to 2.60 and the team ERA to 1.91 through 12 games.

In Game 1, Delana Thomas earned her first collegiate pitching win with three innings of relief of starter Katie Yudin, who vacated the circle up 9-0 after two innings. O'Heir had a double and scored three runs, Eva FitzSimmons had two RBI and scored twice,

Maddy O'Heir had four hits in the doubleheader, including three in Game 2. Now on a five-game hitting streak, she's batting .500 (8 for 16) during that stretch with a team-high .400 average overall.

GAME ONE
  • Fredonia jumped out to a 3-0 lead after Karli Murray doubled, FitzSimmons added an RBI single, and a throwing error with two outs plated two more runs.
  • A six-run second inning by the Blue Devils included a two-run double by O'Heir, an RBI single by Yudin, and sacrifice flies by Cassie Herman and Nicole Kumro.
  • Fredonia's final run came in the fourth inning. It was comprised of a lead-off walk to O'Heir, a sacrifice bunt by Thomas, and a throwing error which enabled O'Heir to score all the way from first.

GAME TWO
  • Murray started off Fredonia's first inning with a hustle triple on a ball into medium left-center. She scored on a single by O'Heir.
  • The Blue Devils to a 2-0 lead in the last of the third when O'Heir single, Yudin doubled, followed by an infield error.
  • Kumro's lead-off single in the last of the sixth started a three-run rally. A bunt single by Sydney Merkley, followed by obstruction, put runners on the corners. Megan Maull brought home Kumro with an infield out. After Amber Piniewski reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on the play, Murray sent a long fly to deep right and both runners scored on the catch as Fredonia pushed its lead to 5-0.

QUICK FACTS
  • Herman made two defensive gems at third base -- one to her left and one to her right -- on hard hit balls by Pitt.-Greensburg.
  • Fredonia's last single-day sweep in Florida came on March 13, 2017, over Bethany and Gallaudet. Its last sweep of any kind came last year, on March 10, over Penn College and the College of New Rochelle at Virginia Beach, Va.
WHAT'S NEXT?
  • The 12-game Florida trip ends with two more games Friday, both at Hancock Park. Game times are 9 a.m. vs. Ohio Wesleyan and 11:15 a.m. vs. the U.S. Coast Guard.
