MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Starting pitchers
Jake Harford (Silver Creek / Silver Creek) and
Michael Wilcox (Kennedy, N.Y. / Falconer) arrived at Saturday's double header missing something -- their spikes. Both wore size 13's. The only other player to own a pair of in that size was freshman Nick Lawlor. Harford and Wilcox both wore Lawlor's spikes and proceeded to combine for 12 1/3 innings of shutout ball before
Steve Zaprowski (Amherst, N.Y. / Will South) slammed the door -- with his own shoes -- as the Devils swept Muhlenburg 1-0 and 9-0 on Saturday.
Harford allowed only two hits as the Mules only managed one runner to reach second base. The senior righty struck out the side to start the game, and finished with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Fredonia scored the game's only run on an RBI ground out by
Ciro Frontale in the fifth inning.
In Game 2, Wilcox worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the first, then cruised the next four innings. His final line was five hits, two walks and three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
The Devils pounded out 13 hits, including four doubles and a Danny Goodbread (Tully, N.Y. / Tully) triple.
Ciro Frontale (Syracuse / Bishop Ludden) plated two runs with a double in the third and finished the day with three RBI.
The big inning was the sixth where Fredonia exploded for seven runs.
Kevin Yirinec (Fairport / Fairport) had two hits in the inning
In addition to Yirinec and Frontale,
Alexio Medina (Marilla, N.Y. / Iroquois) and
Liam Kelly (Buffalo / Bishop Timon) each had a pair of hits.
The Devils dropped a heartbreaker Friday evening, falling to Johnson and Wales, 8-7. Leading 5-1 in the seventh, the Devils surrendered six runs to fall behind 7-5.
Fredonia immediately responded, tying the game with a pair of runs in the eighth.
J & W answered back with a run in the bottom of the eighth to regain the lead.
Fredonia had a chance to rally in the ninth. With a runner on second and one out, Medina had an infield single, but the Wildcats picked off the runner at third, then nailed Medina going to second for a game-ending double play.
Eight Fredonia starters recorded at least two hits, with
Matt Wilhelm collecting a trio of safeties, including a two-run double. They pounded out 17 hits as a team.
Starting pitcher Luke Kusczewski (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Orchard Park) tossed 5 1/3 innings giving up one run. He left with the lead and took a no decision.
Friday's game started late and finished at 10:45 p.m. The Devils turned around for a 10 a.m. double dip, completing playing three games in 16 hours.
The Devils stand at 2-1 and face Lehman at 9 a.m. Sunday to conclude their weekend trip to Myrtle Beach.
