CANTON, N.Y. -- Fredonia State jumped out early but a late rally by Canton proved to be the difference, as the Blue Devils fell 4-3 on the road.
The Devils built a early advantage in the top of the first,
Andrew Tucker delivered the big swing with an RBI double down the left field line to plate the first run. Later in the inning,
Ryan Mettler brought home another run with a sacrifice that scored Tucker, giving Fredonia State a 2-0 lead.
The Devils added to their lead in the second inning with
Bryce Firkins driving in
Vito Verni with an RBI groundout to extend the advantage to 3-0. The Roos broke through in the fifth inning when AJ Campi doubled and later scored on an RBI single by Chris McLean, trimming the deficit to 3-1.
The game shifted in favor of Canton in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jared Paone sparked the rally with an RBI double to bring Canton within one while Eliezer Vázquez followed with a base hit to move the tying run into position. Korbin Lovejoy came through with an RBI single to even the score at 3-3. Later in the inning, Mark Maybee Jr. delivered the go-ahead RBI single, giving Canton its first lead of the game at 4-3.
Morgan Zientara was dominant for the Devils on the mound through the first seven innings. He limited Canton to just one run on five hits while striking out six while Jonah Church was charged with the loss in relief. For Canton, Johnathan Guerrero started and went seven innings, allowing three runs while striking out three. Maxwell Rose earned the win in relief and Zander Johnson secured his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
Fredonia State will return to action with a SUNYAC doubleheader at Canton, with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 25th.
