BOXSCORE MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Fredonia baseball team rallied in the top of the ninth to claim a win in its opening game, 4-2, over Johnson and Wales.
Tied 2-2, Liam "Trot" Kelly and Alexio Medina opened the top of the ninth with back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice bunt by freshman Kevin Yirinec, Kelly scored on a wild pitch. With the infield in, James Krolikowski drove a single through the hole for insurance and a 4-2 lead that would stand.
Junior Lucas Schaefer pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his first win as a Blue Devil. Schafer did the heavy lifting, though, in the eighth.
With bases loaded and one out, Schaefer entered in relief of Bailey Gauthier and promptly induced a double play to end the inning. The Wildcats tied the game in the ninth on a bases-loaded walk.
The Devils struck first in the second inning. Kelly led off with a triple. Medina followed with an RBI single to plate the game's first run.
Medina moved to third following a pair of wild pitches. Steve Zaprowski drove him in with a single.
Blue Devil starting pitcher Zachary Jordon opened with five scoreless frames. In the sixth, with two outs, Wilson Cabral singled. Carlos Sanabria followed with a bloop double to make it a 2-1 game.
Jordan's final line would be 7 1/3 innings, allowing two runs while striking out six and walking three. He handed the ball to Gauthier, who let up a walk, followed by an intentional walk to set up the double play from Schaefer.
Medina finished with a four-for-four performance, and Kelly was two-for-four. They both scored two runs each.
"We played a complete game against a solid program," said head coach Matt Palisin. "Jordon gave us a great effort on the mound and got us deep into the game. After allowing the tying run to score in the eighth, our offense did a great job of picking up the slack and scoring a pair of runs for the win."
The Devils take on the College of Staten Island four a double dip Saturday. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
