Erie, Pa. -- Fredonia State jumped on the board early but couldn't hold off a late surge, falling 7-3 to Penn State Behrend on Tuesday afternoon in Erie.
The Devils got their offense going right away in the opening frame. With a runner in scoring position,
Andrew Tucker came through with a sharp RBI double to left, giving Fredonia State an early edge. The Lions moved in front during the fourth inning, manufacturing a pair of runs. One came across on a wild pitch, and Spencer Deitz added the go-ahead RBI on a fielder's choice to make it 2-1.
Fredonia State, however, evened things up in the sixth thanks to some timely hitting. Josh Monti singled to start the rally, Connor Tyree followed with a double, then
AJ Roach lifted a sacrifice fly to left that brought Monti home to tie the game at 2-2. The Devils regained the lead in the seventh inning briefly.
Noah Panek singled and moved to third on Tucker's second double of the day before Panek came home on a wild pitch, making it 3-2 in favor of the Devils.
That lead didn't last, as Behrend answered with four runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run single from Jake Federouch and an RBI walk by Silvio Ionadi to take control at 6-3. The Lions also added one more insurance run in the eighth.
Fredonia State turned to several pitchers throughout the game, with Michael Gangloff opening with two scoreless innings and Maddox Sheesley adding two shutout frames in relief. Jayden Serotti was charged with the loss, moving to 0-1 on the season. For Penn State Behrend, Will McMahon went 5.1 innings, allowing two runs while striking out five. Jack Baumgartel earned the win to improve to 3-1 while Ethan Tinker closed the door over the final two innings to secure his first save.
The Devil head to Canton next for a three-game SUNYAC series, with action starting Friday, April 24th at 3:00 p.m.
