Split with RIT had clutch pitching, hitting

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State opened its Tuesday doubleheader with a tight 3–2 win over RIT at Blue Devil Field, riding Kendall Phillips' repeated escapes and a game‑changing, two‑run pinch‑hit single from Sophie Reed. The Tigers salvaged a split with a 7-1 win in the nightcap.

RIT put runners on in every inning against Phillips, but the junior right‑hander stranded seven through four scoreless frames. Her biggest stand came in the third, when she allowed a leadoff triple but retired the next three hitters to keep the game 0–0.

The Blue Devils struck first in the third when Chloe Whittingham reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch. Fredonia State's decisive swing came in the fourth. After a walk and a bunt that turned into an error, Reed came off the bench and lined a two‑run single to right‑center, stretching the lead to 3–0.

Freshman Cayzlee Johnson took over in the fifth and worked the final three innings, earning her second save. RIT rallied in the seventh, scoring twice on three hits and two Fredonia errors, but Johnson induced a game‑ending line‑drive double play to first gloved by Kirsten Lajewski.

RIT answered in the second game, using a three‑run fifth and two‑run sixth to pull away.

Fredonia scored first in the second inning when Kim Dorane drove in Reed, who had walked and advanced on a single. RIT took the lead in the third on two unearned runs following a wild pitch and throwing error. The turning point came in the fifth. After a walk and an error, Taryn Jones hit a three‑run homer to left, extending the Tigers' lead to 5–1. RIT added two more in the sixth on a walk, two singles, and a sacrifice fly.

Fredonia put runners on in the sixth but could not break through. Whittingham finished 2‑for‑3, while Arianna Lerouzes added a single off the bench.

The start of the doubleheader was delay for 35 minutes because of lightning in the area.

The Blue Devils return to SUNYAC play with a doubleheader Friday vs. Oswego, starting at 3 p.m.
