FREDONIA, N.Y -- Fredonia State delivered an impressive showing at home, sweeping Oswego State 3-1 and 5-3 in a SUNYAC doubleheader and handing the Lakers their first losses of the season.
Game One:
The Devils opened the scoring in the bottom of the second by taking advantage of Oswego defensive miscues.
Chloe Whittingham reached on an error and moved into scoring position before
Brooke Caldwell drew a walk and advanced. A throwing error by the catcher allowed Whittingham to cross the plate, giving the Devils a 1-0 lead..
The Devils built on that momentum in the third. Kayla Jo Lynn worked a walk and stole second to set the table for Alexa Bogad, who delivered an RBI single to extend the lead. Avery Hill followed immediately with another clutch hit down the right field line, driving in Bogad and pushing Fredonia's advantage to 3-0.
Oswego answered in the fourth, stringing together a pair of singles and a sacrifice to put pressure on the Devils. An RBI groundout plated their lone run, cutting the deficit to 3-1, but that would be all they could muster against Fredonia State pitcher Kendall Phillips. Phillips was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing just one run on five hits and striking out nine.
Offensively, Bogad and Hill led the way with RBIs, while Whittingham and Kirsten Lajewski each contributed hits.
Game Two:
Fredonia State completed the doubleheader sweep using a fast start and steady pitching to hold off a late push from the Lakers. Oswego got on the board first in the opening inning with a triple followed by a sacrifice fly, but the Devils answered immediately in the bottom half. Madison DeVore drew a walk and Jo Lynn reached on a bunt single to spark the rally before Hill delivered a two-run single up the middle. Whittingham followed with an RBI single, giving Fredonia State a quick 3-1 lead after one.
With runners on in the bottom of the second, a throwing error allowed Lajewski to score, and Jo Lynn followed by driving in a run on a groundout, stretching the lead to 5-2. Oswego chipped away in the second with a sacrifice fly and later added a solo home run in the sixth, but the Devils stayed in control behind strong work in the circle. Sabrina Edwards-Smith earned the win, going six innings while striking out nine and allowing three runs. Cayzlee Johnson handled the final frame, working around a baserunner and turning a game-ending double play to secure the save.
At the plate, Hill led the way with two RBIs, while Whittingham added a pair of hits and an RBI.
The Devils will look to continue the momentum into their next matchup as they host Canton for another doubleheader tomorrow, with first pitch set for 10 a.m.
