FREDONIA, N.Y. --
Brooke Caldwell doubled to deep center to bring in pinch-runner
Mia Eickhoff with the winning run as Fredonia State walked off Geneseo, 4-3, in the first game of a non-conference college softball doubleheader Wednesday at Blue Devil Field. It was the Blue Devils' 2026 home opener.
Geneseo's Gabriella Petroski tossed a four-hit shutout for a 4-0 win in the nightcap.
Madison Lowe allowed a two-run homer to Ray Schumacher in the top of the first before settling down to claim the win in Game 1. She also contributed to the offense with an RBI triple in the last of the first.
Avery Hill followed with an RBI double to even the score 2-2 after the first.
Caldwell staked the Blue Devils (4-10) to a 3-2 lead with a double just inside the left-field line, bringing home Lowe with the go-ahead run. The Knights (6-4) tied it at 3-3 on an RBI single by Schumacher in the top of the set, which set the stage for Caldwell's heroics in the bottom half of the inning off Geneseo reliever Mikayla Bucci. The winning run was unearned.
Lowe, Hill, Caldwell, and
Alexa Bogad had two hits each for the Blue Devils, while Bogad singled for the first Fredonia State hit off Petroski in Game 2.
Madison DeVore had a double among the four Fredonia State hits. Petroski homered to start a four-riun Geneseo third inning, which accounted for all the scoring off losing pitcher
Kendall Phillips.
The Blue Devils play their next eight games on the road, starting Friday at the University of Rochester. Their next home game is April 14 vs. Rochester Institute of Technology.Â
