Second and third quarter surge pushes John Carroll past Fredonia State

University Heights, OH -- Fredonia State women's lacrosse kept things tight early but ultimately could not keep pace with John Carrolls attack, falling 16-9 on Saturday afternoon. The Devils showed offensive flashes, but a big second and third quarter surge from John Carroll proved to be the difference.

The Devils scored their first goal when Callin Karalus finished a feed from Katie O'Brien to tie the game at 1-1. O'Brien then scored herself on a free-position shot before the Devils converted on a man up goal from Kiera Young off the pass from Mieley Baran, tying the game again at 3-3 to end the first quarter. In the second quarter, Baran scored again on a man up chance from Megan Karalus and O'Brien added her second goal of the game to even things at 5-5 midway through the quarter. John Carroll, however, closed the half on a dominant run, scoring five goals to take a 10-5 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was all John Carroll, as they added five more goals while holding the Devils scoreless to extend the lead 15-5. The Devils had a strong fourth quarter finish with O'Brien completing her hat trick with another free-position goal and Megan Karalus added a man-up tally. Gabby Lewinski finished off a feed from Piper Evangelist while Young capped the scoring with her second goal of the game off of another free position shot. Unfortunately, the damage from the second and third quarter was to much for Fredonia State to overcome as the Blue Streaks secured the win.

O'Brien led the way offensively for Fredonia State with three goals and an assist, while Young added two goals and Baran contributed a goal and two assists. Defensively for the Devils, Noelle Mendez finished the day with four ground balls and three caused turnovers, while O'Brien added two ground balls.

In goal, Jessica Kowalski made five saves in the first half, while Ashleigh Manns came in and recorded two saves in the second half. On the other side, John Carroll's Josephine Lawler stopped three shots to earn the win.

John Carroll was led by Abby Cassidy. Cassidy added three goals and four assists for the Blue Streaks while Mea Musillo scored four goals as well.

With the loss, Fredonia State moves to 4-6 on the season (0-1 SUNYAC). The Blue Devils will look to bounce back on Wednesday, March 25th at 4:00 p.m. when they return home to face Oswego in a SUNYAC conference matchup.
