Oswego pulls away from Fredonia State in first game at new stadium

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State women's lacrosse opened a new chapter on Wednesday afternoon, hosting its first-ever game at the schools brand new track & field stadium. The Devils, however, fell to Oswego State by a final score of 12-5. With the loss, Fredonia State moves to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in SUNYAC play.

The Lakers struck first with back-to-back goals to take a 2-0 lead, but Fredonia State answered quickly. Gabby Lewinski got the Devils on the board off a feed from Katie O'Brien. Less then a minute later Jenna Slamka finished a pass from Lewinski to tie the game at 2-2. Oswego State added a late goal by Abigail Dicks to go up 3-2 heading into the second. In the second quarter, Piper Evangelist tied the game back up again with a free-position goal to make it 3-3. Oswego State responded with three straight goals to stretch the lead to 6-3 going into halftime. 

To start the second half, Evangelist scored her second goal of the game for the Devils on an unassisted effort, cutting the deficit to 6-4. Oswego State, however, answered again with three goals in the quarter to extend their lead to 9-4. The Laker's continued to pull away in the fourth, adding three more goals before Slamka netted her second of the contest late to make it 12-5, which held as the final score.

Offensively for the Devils, Evangelist and Slamka led Fredonia State with two goals apiece, while Lewinski added a goal and an assist. Katie O'Brien contributed an assist and was strong in the circle adding a team-high four draw controls. Defensively, Shaliyah Helmick stood out for Fredonia State with three ground balls and three caused turnovers.

The Laker's were led by Alexis Hill, who had a dominant performance with five goals and two assists. In net, Alana Iacovissi recorded 11 saves in the win while Fredonia's Jessica Kowalski finished with nine saves. 

The Devils will look to regroup as they hit the road for a conference matchup against New Paltz on Saturday, March 28th at 12:00 p.m.
