DAVENPORT, Fla. -- Fredonia State fell in a narrow 7-6 contest to Principia on Tuesday, dropping to 1-8 on the season. The Devils jumped out to an early lead and plated six runs through four innings, but were unable to hold off a late push from Principia.
Fredonia State opened the scoring in the third inning when
Nick Vitelli delivered an RBI single to bring home
Giovanni Amodeo to go up 1-0. Principia answered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI groundout to even things at 1-1.
The Devils broke things open in the fourth with a five-run frame. Connor Tyree started the rally with an RBI single, followed by
Noah Panek and Domenic Hickock adding RBI walks to push the score to 3-1.
Ryan Mettler capped the inning by driving in two runs on a error from Princpia's short stop, extending the lead to 6-1.
Principia responded in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs cutting the deficit to 6-4. In the fifth inning, Principia completed the comeback with three more runs, highlighted by an RBI single that gave them a 7-6 lead that they would not give back. The Devils threatened late, putting runners on in both the eighth and ninth innings, but could not push across the tying run.
On the mound,
Connor Burkestone started for the Devils and delivered two scoreless innings and allowed just one hit.
Brennan Bowes worked into the fourth but ran into trouble, allowing four runs (one earned), while
Seth Soultanidis (0-1) was charged with the loss after giving up three runs in relief.
Talfourd Wynne also saw action pitching 3.2 scoreless innings. For Principia, Ethan Booth allowed six runs (four earned) over 3.1 innings. Cole Christensen (1-3) earned the win with four shutout innings, and Ben Sanders recorded the save.
The Blue Devils will close out their RussMatt Central Florida Invitational matchup against Bates at 1:00 p.m. in Winter Haven, Fla. at Chain of Lakes Field #1.
