PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Fredonia State erased an early deficit and even grabbed the lead late, but Chatham scored the game's final two goals to hand the Blue Devils a 12-11 non conference road loss on Saturday.
To start the game, the Devils built a 2-0 lead in the opening quarter when
Gabby Lewinski scored off of a feed from
Mieley Baran, then Baran found
Kiera Young to make it 2-0. Chatham, however, answered with four straight goals before the end of the first.In the second quarter,
Amelia LeFevre scored on a free-position chance for Fredonia State's lone goal of the period.
Out of halftime, the Devils continued to battle back with Young scoring on a free-position attempt to cut the deficit to one and after Chatham added two more goals, LeFevre answered again to keep Fredonia within two.Taking advantage of some man up opportunities, the Devils found the back of the net twice to tie the game 7-7. Chatham scored in the final seconds of the quarter to carry an 8-7 edge into the final quarter.
In the fourth, Baran gave the Devils their first lead since the opening half when she scored off a
Noelle Mendez assist with 4:41 left. Chatham, though, answered with the final two goals to close the game out with a one point victory.
Baran led Fredonia State's offense with a six-point day on one goal and five assists. Young, Evangelist, LeFevre, and Slamka each scored twice, while
Megan Karalus and Lewinski added one goal apiece. Defensively,
Alyssa Vukosic had a team-high four caused turnovers and three ground balls.
In goal,
Jessica Kowalski recorded 11 saves while Chatham's Meghan Cuza-Berry made five saves.
Fredonia State is now 4-3 and will return to action Wednesday, March 18, at 5:00 p.m. at Baldwin Wallace.
