FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men's basketball team took an early lead, but could not hold back Hartwick in a 94-75 loss on Saturday.
Martin Garza led Devils with 22 points and nine rebounds.
Stevie Williams added 18 points and three assists.
Following a field goal by
Antowan Holmes, the Devils would lead 14-6, gaining their biggest lead of the contest. Hartwick then scored the next 11 to take the lead for good. They would use a trio of three pointers to power that run, and would hit on 13 of 28 threes for the game. By the half, Hartwick would go up 17 points, leading 53-36.
The Devils used an 8-0 run midway through the second half to cut the lead to 11 points, 67-56. However, Hartwick kept up the pressure and would lead by as many as 22 points, outscoring the Devils 41-39 in the second half.
The Devils outrebounded Hartwick 29-26. Hartwick hit 55 percent from the field, and the Devils shot 48 percent.
Hartwick (6-3) was led by Mike Gitz with 21 points, including four threes. Robby Lucas added 12 points and six assists. Hartwick is coached by former Blue Devil standout Brad Cooper, a two-time All SUNYAC player at Fredonia State.
Next up for the Devils (1-8) is a women's/men's doubleheader at Cortland on Tuesday, Jan. 6th.
