FREDONIA, N.Y. -- After hanging with a solid New Paltz squad through the first quarter, the Fredonia State women's basketball team was outscored 25-5 in the second quarter and would not recover in a 65-52 loss to the Hawks. They did outscore New Paltz 31-30 in the second half.
The Devils (8-5 / 3-3 SUNYAC) were led by
Jayssa Snelick with 19 points and four steals, and freshman
Aliyah Hopkins had her first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Grace Alexander added 10 points.
New Paltz (11-2 / 5-1 SUNYAC) received 21 points and nine rebounds from Karly Wittenbauer, and 20 points from Brianna Fitzgerald.
After the Devils took the five-point lead at the end of the first, New Paltz would finally go up 20-19 after a pair of free throws by Fitzgerald. They heated up quickly and concluded a 19-0 run that put them in control of the contest.
Neither team was particularly hot shooting, with the Devils connecting on 32 percent from the floor and going 4-22 from long range, and New Paltz shot 39 percent, including 2-16 on threes. New Paltz won the battle of the boards, 38-35.
The Devils play host to Oneonta at 2 p.m. on Saturday. In a busy night on campus, the men's team plays at 4 p.m., as does the men's hockey team when they take on Oswego in Steele Hall.
