FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men's basketball team could not hold on to a slim second-half lead, and fell to New Paltz, 78-67, on Friday. The Devils last led 48-47 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game, but would be outscored 31-19 from that point on.
Christian Williams led the Devils (1-12 / 1-5 SUNYAC) with 16 points.
Martin Garza, 12 points, and
Stevie Williams, 10 points, were the only other players to reach double-digits.
Ethan Sokolowski had six assists.
The Hawks' Lamar Matthews led all scorers with 25 points, and Mo Sylla had 14 points and 10 rebounds. They improved to 5-8 overall and 3-3 in the SUNYAC.
Things were going well for the Devils early on. They shot out to a 16-4 lead, then would go up by 19 points after a layup by Sokolowski to make it a 27-8 game with 8:39 left in the opening frame.
New Paltz finally found its touch and would go on a 26-10 run to end the half. The Devils' lead stood at 37-34.
In the second half, New Paltz would tie the game at 43. After three more ties, they would take their first lead, 50-48, at the 12:03 mark. Later in the half, a 12-0 New Paltz run essentially spelled doom for the Devils, giving the Hawks a 17-point lead.
Both teams grabbed 29 rebounds. New Paltz was 6-16 on three pointers, and the Devils were 4-18.
The Devils play host to Oneonta at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
