Devils split in doubleheader against New Paltz

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State softball team split against New Paltz in a doubleheader on Friday evening. The Hawks took game one by a final score of 6-3 but the Devils claimed a 8-0 victory in game two behind solid pitching from Sabrina Edwards-Smith and an explosive six run third inning in game two.

Game one:

A couple of two run innings powered the Hawks to a 6-2 win in the opening game. They led 2-1 going into the fourth and would score runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning to close out the Devils.

Offensively, Madison Devore went 1-3 with a RBI. Kirsten Lajewski added a triple while Madison Lowe had a hit and a score for the Devils as well.

Kendall Phillips took the loss in the circle, going seven innings giving up six runs, while scattering seven hits with six strike outs.

Game two:

Edwards-Smith, now 4-3,  went all five innings, scattering two hits and striking out four. Allie Wandell went 1-2 at the plate with a two RBI home run to give the Devils a early 2-0 lead. Five other Devils -- Kayla Jo Lynn, Avery Hill, Chloe Whittingham, Lowe and Lajewski all had one hit apiece, as the Devils knocked out six hits in the game.

Up 2-0 to start the bottom of the sixth, the Devils scored six times and held the Hawks scoreless in the fourth and fifth inning to take the mercy-rule victory.

The split leaves New Paltz at 21-15 on the season with the Devils giving the Hawks just their second loss in SUNYAC play. The Devils (13-7/10-6 SUNYAC) take on Oneonta on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
