CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State baseball team dropped the first game of a three-game set to Cortland, 8-2, on Thursday. The Devils were limited to six hits, led by doubles off the bats of
Cole Schraufstetter and
Andrew Tucker.
Cortland took the lead in the third inning on a homerun by Dylan Tierney. They tacked on an unearned run in the top of the fifth off Fredonia State starter,
Nick Syposs.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Devils halved the lead when an
AJ Roach single scored
Andrew Tucker to make it 2-1.
Cortland was able to pull away with four runs in the top of the sixth. The first two came home on sacrifice flies. With two out, a two-run homerun by Nick Marola made it 6-1.
In the top of the ninth, Cortland got a two-run single by Luke Schartner to go up, 8-1.
Fredonia State added a run in the bottom of the ninth.
Shane Pray and
Alex Ahlstrom singled to start the inning. A sacrifice fly by Tucker would plate Pray to give the final score.
Syposs took the loss with five-plus innings of work. He gave up four runs, three earned, and only three hits.
Mike Protz had a solid outing from the pen, giving up one hit and two strikeouts in two innings of work.
The same two teams square off at Noon on Friday. The games are being played at Cortland's turf field due to wet conditions in Fredonia. The Devils are the home team on the scoreboard.
