SALAMANCA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State Blue Devils lost on Sunday when SUNY Canton erupted for 10 runs in the final frame to capture an 11–3 victory at Salamanca high school.
To start the game, the Devils got on the scoreboard first with
Cole Schraufstetter reaching on a hit-by-pitch and was later driven in by a clutch RBI single from
Tyler Curtis. In the second, catcher
Vinny Grazioplene led off with a double and came home on a pair of wild pitches, giving the Devils a 2–0 cushion. Fredonia State tacked on another run in the third when
Alex Ahlstrom delivered an RBI single to bring home
Christian Cabrera.
The game unraveled for Fredonia State in the top of the ninth. After tying the game at 3–3, Canton's Edilberto Rosado delivered the dagger with a bases-clearing double that drove in three runs. Derek Maldonado followed with an RBI double, and Chris McLean and Campi added RBI hits of their own. Sal Diaz capped off the rally with a two-run home run to complete the 10-run frame. Fredonia State couldn't recover in the bottom half of the ninth, going down in order to end the game.
Pitcher Javier Chico earned the win for SUNY Canton, tossing three hitless innings while striking out two. Pitcher
Morgan Zientara got the start for the Devils and tossed seven innings and finished with six strike outs.
Fredonia State will look to rebound quickly as they return to action Tuesday April 15, when they travel to Penn State Behrend. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
