PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State softball team had a dominant pitching performance and a clutch homerun to win Game 1 by a 2-1 score, before falling 10-2 in the nightcap.
Game 1
Kendall Phillips was the story of Game 1 as the sophomore hurler spun a complete-game, five-hitter giving up one unearned run. She struck out 14, including all three batters to slam the door in the bottom of the seventh.
All the Blue Devil offense came on one swing of the bat, when Mia Eickoff slammed a two-run homerun in the top of the second inning. With one out,
Madison Lowe was hit by a pitch, followed by the blast to left field.
Plattsburgh's Carly Gemmett was nearly equal to Philips in the circle. The Cardinal pitcher gave up only two hits and struck out 13 batters in hard-luck loss.
Game 2
Tied 2-2, the Plattsburgh bats would explode for eight runs in the fourth inning to take control of the second game. They would go on to win 10-2 in five innings.
Megan Guidry knocked her first homerun of the year in the fourth to tie the game a 2-all. She would finish with two of the Devils' five hits in the game. A single by Eickoff had scored
Elsie Fisher in the third inning to account for Fredonia State's other run.
The Cardinals had 11 hits while the Devils'
Madison Lowe took the loss in the circle. She went 4 2/3 innings and gave up eight runs, six earned.
Plattsburgh is now 5-10 overall and 2-2 in the SUNYAC.
The Devils (5-1/3-1 SUNYAC) take on Potsdam on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
