POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Fredonia State softball delivered a dominant performance on the road Saturday, sweeping Potsdam in a SUNYAC doubleheader at Maxcy Softball Field. The Blue Devils took Game One 11–2 in six innings and followed it up with a 10–6 win in Game Two to improve to 7–11 overall and 5–1 in SUNYAC play.
Game One:
The Devils came out swinging in the opening game, pouring in six runs in the second inning and capping it with five more in the sixth to cruise to the victory.
Megan Guidry launched a three-run home run—her first of the season—to put the Devils ahead 4–0. The inning continued with an RBI double by
Avery Hill and a single by
Madison Lowe, aided by a Potsdam error, pushed the lead to 6–0.
Fredonia State added five more in the top of the sixth, again capitalizing on Potsdam errors. Guidry stayed hot with a clutch RBI grounder, while Chloe Whittingham and Hill each drove in runs with extra-base hits. Hill finished the game 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a pair of doubles, while Guidry went 1-for-3 with four RBIs.
Kendall Phillips was dominant in the circle for Fredonia, tossing six innings while giving up just three hits and two unearned runs. She also struck out eight to earn her fourth win of the season.
Potsdam finished with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Danielle Moscarello, followed by a wild pitch that brought her in to score.Kiara Lovejoy and Sam Horne each had a hit in the effort as well.
Game Two:
The Devils scored in five of the seven innings, including two key insurance runs in the top of the seventh to seal the win in game two.
Madison Devore led the way with a 4-for-5 performance, driving in two runs and scoring once. Devore sparked a three-run second inning when she reached base after an error and was driven in by
Kayla Jo Lynn, who later scored on a second Potsdam miscue. Devore also delivered a key RBI single in the fifth and another in the seventh to keep the Devils ahead.
Potsdam scored three in the third to cut the deficit to 5-4. Lexie Cottrill went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including a run-scoring double. Alexys Rosick also had a standout game, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored.
Fredonia responded with runs in the fourth and fifth, including an RBI single by Madison Lowe and a triple from Allie Wandell that set up another score. In the seventh, Megan Guidry tripled home a run before scoring on Devore's final hit of the game.
Sabrina Edwards-Smit earned the win in relief, tossing three innings and allowing just one earned run before giving way to Kendall Phillips, who recorded her first save of the season with two shutout innings.
