FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Another solid pitching performance by Fredonia State's
Kendall Phillips went for naught Thursday in the first game of a SUNYAC softball doubleheader against Cortland.
The visiting Red Dragons (10-12, 6-0) scored an unearned run to secure a 1-0 win over Phillips and the Blue Devils (7-13, 5-3) in the opener, then used a pair of homers to coast to an 11-2 victory in the nightcap.
Halle Wright singled to lead off the game, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a dropped fly ball for the only run off Phillips, who allowed six hits, walked four, and struck out six while seeing her earned run average drop to 0.89. She hasn't allowed an earned run in 39 1/3 consecutive innings.
A double by
Avery Hill and singles by
Brooke Caldwell and
Allie Wandell were the only Fredonia State hits in the opener. The Blue Devils managed only five hits in the nightcap, including an RBI double by
Kayla Jo Lynn.
Vanessa Galbraith pitched five solid innings of relief despite yielding a pair of Cortland homers.
Fredonia State stays in SUNYAC competition with a doubleheader Friday at Oswego State, followed with another doubleheader Saturday at SUNY Canton.
