OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State's softball team had a tale of two games on Friday afternoon, exploding offensively in the opener before being stifled in game two during their SUNYAC doubleheader at Oswego.Â
Game OneÂ
Fredonia State delivered a dominant all-around performance in the first game, shutting out Oswego 12–0 behind a 15-hit offensive outburst and a five-hit shutout from pitcher Kendall Phillips.
After a quiet first two innings, the Devils broke the game open in the top of the third. Kayla Lynn and Megan Guidry led off with back-to-back singles, and a sacrifice bunt by Maddison Devore moved both runners into scoring position. Brooke Caldwell put Fredonia State on the board with an RBI double, followed by an RBI single from Allie Wandell. The biggest blow came from Avery Hill, who blasted a three-run homer to left, giving Fredonia State a 5–0 lead.
The rally continued after a double by Maddison Lowe and an RBI double from Kirsten Lajewski. After a fly out, Lajewski swiped third base and came home on an RBI infield single by Lynn to make it 7–0.
Fredonia State tacked on five more in the seventh to cruise to a victory with Phillips going the distance in the circle, scattering five hits and striking out six while walking just four.
Game Two
Game two was a much different story, as Fredonia State was held to just one hit in a 2–0 loss. Oswego's pitcher Maria. Lutz pitched the whole game for the Lakers, allowing just a single to Devore in the sixth inning and striking out six.
Oswego took a 1–0 lead in the bottom of the first. After a lead off single from Kira Wright and a sacrifice bunt, Kylie Detz drove her in with a double down the left side. The Lakers added an insurance run in the sixth as well.
The Devils move to 8-14 on the season and 5-4 in the SUNYAC and will play next in a doubleheader at Canton on Saturday April, 19th. Game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
