Devils suffer first loss of season

ALFRED, N.Y. -- In a matchup of 3-0 teams, the Alfred Saxons came out on top of Fredonia State, 62-58, in non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday. For the Devils, Grace Alexander had 19 points and six assists, and Allie Wandell added nine points and 12 boards.

Alexander had 13 of her points in the first half, as the Devils nursed a 35-28 lead at the break. 

Alfred opened up the second half with seven-straight points to tie the game at 35. 

The third quarter ended up 47-46 in favor of the Saxons after Samantha Fischer nailed a three with 19 seconds left.

Alfred held the lead the entire fourth quarter, but the Devils made it interesting late. With Alfred up 60-51, Fredonia State scored the next seven points to make it a two-point game, 60-58. The rally was capped by a three pointer by Wandell with 17 seconds left to play.

However, the Saxons (4-0) would score the final basket and claim the win. Grace Rittenhouse led Alfred with 17 points, and Jaidyn Chest had 10. 

The Devils (3-1) are at home this Saturday against No. 24 ranked John Carroll University.
