GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Fredonia State's started quickly for the second straight game before falling 74-70 to Grove City in non-conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Devils (0-2) led by as many as 14 points in the first half before Grove City rallied. The Wolverines (2-2) are members of the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
The Blue Devils built a 37-30 halftime lead on the solid shooting -- 14 of 27 (51.9 percent) from the field, including 6 of 13 from beyond the three-point arc.
Brandon Kulakowski finished with 20 points and five assists and
Martin Garza added 16 points for the Blue Devils, including nine straight during one stretch in the second half.
Grove City opened the second half with a 10-3 run to forge a 40-40 tie, the first of four ties in a back-and-forth second half. The final tie came with 51 seconds left when a free throw by Garza pulled the Blue Devils even at 70-70.
Grove City regained the lead for good on a turnaround jumper by Mike Christenson with 28 seconds to go. Chase Yarberough finished with 23 points, eight rebounds, and five assists to lead the Wolverines.
Fredonia State's string of six straight non-conference games to open the season resumes Wednesday at Hartwick, followed by the home opener next Friday night against Pitt-Bradford.
