FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's volleyball team came up just short in a tightly contested SUNYAC match up on Saturday falling to the Potsdam Bears. The Devils fell behind in the first set but rallied to win the second and third sets. However, Potsdam responded in the fourth and fifth set to claim a 3-2 victory.
The loss ended Fredonia State's three match win streak as the Devils move to 8-12 and 1-1 in the SUNYAC. Potsdam improved to 8-4 and 1-1 in the SUNYAC. Fredonia State also had a three-match win streak vs. Potsdam snapped.
Fredonia State had numerous strong performances throughout the marathon match. Sophomore outside hitter
Kylie O'Brien had 23 kills with and senior
Erin Callahan and freshmen
Logann Lexner each collecting 11 kills. Sophomore setter
Molly Cassidy had 27 assists and freshmen
Maeve Musielak finished with a game high 30 digs for the Devils as well.
The first two sets were extremely close with Potsdam claiming the first set 26-24 and Fredonia State with the 27-25 victory in the second set. The Devils dominated the third set from start to finish and easily won 25-11. Potsdam did not relent, though. The Bears began to assert themselves offensively as they won the fourth set 25-18.
In the fifth set with Cassidy serving, the Devils scored seven straight points to jump out to a early lead. Potsdam, however, responded with seven straight points of their own down the stretch to take the 13-12 lead. In the end, back to back kills from Potsdam's Megan Henry clinched the victory for the Bears.
Fredonia State returns to action on Friday, October 11th at 6:00 p.m. when they travel to Oneonta.
