FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State volleyball team opened up conference play against Plattsburgh State. The Devils emerged victorious as they swept the Cardinals 25-22, 25-15, 25-22. Fredonnia State was playing just their third home match and 18th match of the season. The Devils improved to 8-11 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Plattsburgh started quickly in the first set by taking a 8-2 lead. However the Devils reeled off four consecutive points to bring the score to 8-6. Late into the set with the score reading 20-16 in favor of the Cardinals, the Devils outscored Plattsburgh 9-2 down the stretch to claim the set 25-22.
Fredonia State jumped Plattsburgh in the second set going up five to nothing to start. The Devils scored in bunches throughout the set with Fredonia State leading the entire way to easily take the second set 25-15.
The Devils led most of the third set but were tied 21-21 before
Maeve Musielak put the Devils up by one with a kill. After a bad set from Plattsburgh, the Devils found themselves up two.
Olivia Boswell and
Erin Callahan earned kills to put the Devils score at 24 and after a attacking error by Plattsburgh, the Devils won the set 25-22 and won the match.
The Devils outhit Plattsburgh .145 to .086. Fredonia State finished with 4 blocks and collected 53 digs to the Cardinals 44.
Callahan and
Amaya Lewczyk led Fredonia State with two blocks each. Musielak had a game high 18 digs. On offense
Kylie O'Brien led the way with 13 kills. Cassidy ran the offense by spreading the ball around while dishing out 13 assists.
Fredonia State will host to Potsdam on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Dods Hall. The Bears (7-4) fell to Buff State on Friday.
