CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's volleyball team opened its 2023 campaign with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-11) loss to Rowan at the Cortland Invitational on Friday.
Freshman
Kylie O'Brien led the Devils with six of the team's 20 kills.
Gabrielle Sordetto had four, and
Grace Kusmierz and
Emma Foley had three apiece. Freshman
Molly Cassidy had nine assists in two games played, and fellow first-year setter
Olivia Boswell picked up five in her one set of work.Cassidy and
Elora Sherman had three aces apiece.
Sherman added four digs to top the defense.
Cassidy started the match off with ann ace for the first point of the evening. Rowan would score the next five points and would not trail after that.
Rowan jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the second set to take command. The third set saw them keep the early momentum going up 8-3 and winning in straight sets.
"Tonight we saw stretches where we were effective at pressuring Rowan," said head coach
Geoff Braun, " but it wasn't often enough to win a volleyball match. We are young and will learn a lot early on this season. I'm confident in this group of young ladies."
The Devils take on the University of Rochester and St. Lawrence in Day 2 of the Invitational on Saturday.
