FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader in its last conference series of the season. Game 1 went 5-2 in favor of the Hawks. Game 2 ended with a 12-3 final.
Game 1
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Blue Devils struck twice to tie the game. A bunt hit by Lexi Wulf and a walk by
Emily Chelius set up
Erin Cunningham to drive in the first run with a single.
Amanda Eastman grounded out to tie the game a 2-2.
New Paltz used a pair of leadoff bunt singles to set the table for a two-run inning in the top of the fifth. A sacrifice fly and double would give the Hawks a 4-2 lead. In the seventh, a pair of doubles gave New Paltz an insurance run.
The Devils were held to four hits by New Paltz starting pitcher Lindy Roman, who improved her record to 16-2.
Emily Chelius went the distance for Fredonia State. She gave up five runs, struck out three, and walked three.
Game 2
New Paltz pounded out 18 hits in the nightcap. However, things looked promising early for the Devils. Lexi Wulf scored on the backend of a double steal to give the team a 1-0 lead in the first.
The Hawks would score nine times over the next four innings before the Devils found the scoring column again. Trailing 9-1 in the bottom of the fifth,
Avery Hill singled in Wulf to make it a 9-2 game.
Three more New Paltz runs in the top of the seventh gave them a double-digit lead, 12-2.
Madison Esmond singled home
Victoria Pauwels in the bottom half of the frame to produce the 12-3 final.
The Devils have one more home doubleheader left. They take on Penn State Behrend on Monday to wrap up the 2023 campaign.
