FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Penn State Behrend on Monday, ending the 2023 campaign for the Blue Devils. They fell by scores of 6-1 and 11-1.
Game 1
The opener saw Fredonia State's
Vanessa Galbraith match up against Behrend's Kayla Lindberg. Both pitchers proved efficient, finishing the contest in an hour-and-a-half. Galbraith spun seven innings giving up 11 hits, while walking none, and striking out three against the AMCC regular-season champions. Lindberg gave up four hits and one run, while walking one and striking out six.
The Devils were paced by two hits from
Isabella Lemke.
Madison Esmond and
Courtney Peregosky had the other hits.
The Devils ended Lindberg's shutout bid when Peregosky singled then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Lemke followed with a single, putting runners at the corners. Lemke was thrown out stealing second, but Peregosky was able to score.
Game 2
The Devils'
Mack Celauro matched up against Abby Tingley in the second game. Cleauro would go the distance without allowing a walk, scattering eight hits, and striking out one. Tingley allowed one run on four hits, striking out four, and walking none.
Behrend jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, using a pair of singles, a double, and an error.
Fredonia State rallied for a run in the bottom of the inning.
Allie Wandell reached first on an error, and would eventually come around to score on a fielder's choice.
Both teams were held scoreless over the next three innings before Behrend struck again in the top of the fifth. After the first two batters were retired, Behrend used a two-base error and a single to up its lead to 4-1. A double brought in the fifth run, but the Devils were able to end the threat gunning down the runner at third as she tried to stretch out a triple.
Three straight hits to start the sixth inning would eventually lead to four more scores for the Lions.
