CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State baseball team came back from a 5-2 deficit to tie the game at 6-all, before giving up seven runs in the tenth inning of Game 2, falling 13-6 to Cortland on Saturday. The Red Dragons took the opener, 7-0.
Game 1
The Devils did not get much going against Cortland starting pitcher, Bryan Bernard. He limited the Devils to three hits through six innings striking out seven. He gave way to Shane Van Dam, who gave up one hit and struck out seven in three innings of work.Â
Garrett Stuckey,
Mario Williams,
Jordan Maher, and
AJ Roach accounted for the four Blue Devil safeties.
On the mound for Fredonia State, Nate O'Brochta went 5 2/3 innings, giving up one earned run.
Owen Ludwig finished the game, going 3 1/3 innings, giving up two runs and striking out three.
Game 2
Trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth,
Brady Ventura singled home
Jake Wentland to tie the game. The teams played a scoreless ninth before Cortland's big tenth inning secured the win.
The Devils struck first in the bottom of the first. Stuckey tripled in
Alex Gannon, who had walked. Stuckey was plated by Williams' single for a 2-0 lead.
Cortland scored a single run in the top of the second. They would then score five times in the top of the fourth and go up 6-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Devils would score three times to pull within a run, 6-5. Gannon started the inning with a double.
Tyler Curtis then ripped a one-out double to plate Gannon. Curtis came home on a Stuckey base hit. The third run came home on an RBI single from Maher.Â
Ventura's hit would send things to extras.
Nick Syposs had a strong outing for the Devils. He tossed five scoreless innings of relief before leaving with one out and the bases loaded in the 10th. A hit batter, and homerun followed, with three of the runs being charged to Syposs.
Morgan Zientara started and went four innings, giving up six runs. Both Zientara and Syposs struck out four batters.
Stuckey paced the Devils with three hits, two RBI, and two runs.
Chet Palmer and Maher added a pair of base hits to the team's 12-hit attack.
The Devils head to Hilbert on Monday for a doubleheader.
