Devils come up short in SUNYAC series

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State baseball team completed its three-game series vs. Oswego on Sunday and Monday. The Devils would drop all three games.

Game 1
The first game of the series was played at Doubleday Field in Auburn due to poor field conditions at Laker Field. The Devils fell 5-2 in the opener.

Freshman Morgan Zientara was matched up against grad student Kieran Finnegan of the Lakers. Zientara threw six strong innings.

The Lakers big inning came in the fourth when they scored four runs to take a 5-1 lead. In his six innings of work, Zientara would strike out six and not issue a walk. Finnegan tossed five shutout innings.

Michael Burns finished the game for the Devils with two scoreless innings.Offensively, Jake Wentland had two of the Devils' seven hits.

Game 2
Games 2 and 3 were played on Monday at Monroe Community College as Laker Field continued to dry out. Again it was a freshman vs. a graduate student, as Nick Syposs matched up against Anthony Van Fossen. The Lakers scored eight runs over the first three innings to take command of the game.

The Devils mustered just two hits in the game, with Jordan Maher and Tyler Curtis collecting the safeties. Curtis doubled in Wentland, who had walked, for Fredonia State's run.

Alex Needham threw 3 2/3 innings of relief, giving up one run.

Game 3
The final game was tied 6-6 after five-and-a-half innings. The Lakers then scored six runs over the final three innings to take the win. The Lakers took full advantage of the extra year from Covid, marching out their third grad-student-starting pitcher of the series, and used pitcher-by-committee to scatter 15 hits over nine innings. Junior Nate O'Brochta started and threw five innings for the Devils, and struck out four in a no decision.

Garrett Stuckey led the Devils with three hits, and Chet Palmer was 2-2 with a pair of walks. Wentland, Kyle Tedford, Riley Cardinali, and Brady Ventura each had a pair of hits, with Wentland driving in a pair. Maher added a triple, while Wentland, Cardinali, and Tedford each doubled.

Nate Lockwood finished the game on the mound for the Devils, giving up one run in two innings of work.

The Devils are scheduled to take on Allegheny at Ludwig Field on Wednesday.
