CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Down 10-0 after five-and-a-half innings, the Fredonia State baseball team rallied for 10 runs over the final four innings, but it was not enough as they dropped Game 1 of its three-game set with Cortland, 14-10, on Friday. With the bases loaded,
Jordan Maher lifted a fly ball to the warning track that ended the game.
Junior
Tyler Curtis had a double, triple, and a homerun and five RBI to pace the Devil offense.
Fredonia State scored three in the sixth, two in the seventh, one in the eighth, and four in the ninth and finished the game with the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate. Maher -- who had two hits in the game -- fell a few feet short of a homerun.
In addition to Curtis and Maher, five other Devils had multi-hit games as the team stroked a season-high 17Â hits, topping the 15 hits in their previous game at Oswego.
Brady Ventura,
Riley Cardinali,
Matt Wojcik,
Jake Wentland, and
Chet Palmer all had two safeties.
Kyle Tedford and Cardinali both added a double.Â
Tedford and Curtis got the offense started with back-to-back doubles to account for three runs in the sixth.Â
Palmer had a two-run single in the seventh, and Curtis blasted a solo homer in the eighth.Â
In the ninth, the Devils scored all three runs with two outs. Curtis got the scoring going with a two-run triple. Wentland singled home Curtis.
Garrett Stuckey singled, then Wojcik followed with a base hit on an 0-2 pitch to load the bases. Cardinali singled home another run and kept the base juiced before Maher's flyball ended the game. The Devils had seven hits in the inning.
Derek Walters took the loss on the mound, going three innings and giving up four runs, two earned.
Mario Williams, Alex Needham, and Nate Zicari each came on in relief.Â
Cortland went through seven different pitchers, and offensively, had 12 hits.Â
Game 2 of the series begins tomorrow at Noon. Due to the change in location, likely no video stream will be available.
