FLORIDA -- Leading 12-11 with runners at second and third and nobody out, freshman hurler
Morgan Zientara was able to get the final three outs as the Fredonia State baseball team hung on for the victory.
Michael Byrns put the Devils in position to win, tossing 4 2/3 innings of solid relief while the Blue Devil offense rallied.
In the top of the ninth, after Canton had already plated three runs without the Devils recording an out, the tying run was at third, and the go-ahead run at second. Zientara induced a popup back to him, then struck out the next batter. After a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, the final out came when Canton fouled out to catcher
Riley Cardinali.
Alex Gannon led the offense with three hits, two runs, two RBI, and two stolen bases.
Jeremy Rosado,
Garrett Stuckey, and
Ethan Behnke each had two hits, with Rosado and Stuckey each scoring three times. Stuckey blasted his first homerun of the season.
Tied 6-6, the Devils' big inning came in the bottom of the seventh when they put up five runs. Back to back walks and an infield hit by
Jordan Maher loaded the bases. Gannon then doubled in a pair of runs. He would eventually come around to score when he stole third and advanced home on the errant throw by the catcher. Behnke drove the fourth run home with a triple, then scored on a base hit by Jacob Wentland.
The Devils added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth that would proved very beneficial. Rosado trotted home after the third balk of the game.
Zientara was credited with the save, tossing the final two innings. Nate Lockwood started for the Devils, going 2 1/3 before Byrns came on in relief.
Canton outhit the Devils, 14-13, with Nathan Welch getting a four-hit day. The wild affair also saw the two teams combine for 25 strikeouts, 14 walks, nine errors, six wild pitches, five hit batters, and three balks.
The Devils have an off day Friday, then take on Ramapo in a doubleheader on Saturday.
