KISSIMMEE, FL. -- The Fredonia State softball team played two games on Saturday and a pair on Sunday. They came up short in both ends of the doubleheaders. They fell to Rowan (2-0) and Western New England (7-3) on Saturday, and to Simpson (10-1) and to Springfield (8-0) on Sunday.
SATURDAY
Game 1 vs. Rowan
The Devils bats took some time to start going as Rowan's Rachael Lutz had a no-hitter going through 6 2/3 innings.
Avery Hill and
Allie Wandell registered back-to-back hits before a groundout to third ended the Devils' rally.
Emily Chelius turned in a solid effort in the circle for Fredonia State. She went 6.0 innings, surrendering four hits and one earned run while striking out a pair in the complete-game effort.
Defensively,
Megan Guidry flashed some leather. After gunning down a runner at the plate in the first inning to keep a 0-0 tie, she had a diving catch in left field later in the game.
Game 2 - Western New England
The Devils ripped nine hits in Game 2. Wandell and
Alyssa Santiago each had a pair while Wandell added a double and a stolen base.
Vanessa Gailbreath started on the mound and allowed two runs -- one earned -- over the first two innings. In the fourth, a Fredonia State error led to three unearned runs as they fell behind 5-0.
Erin Cunningham came on in relief and would go 2 1/3 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, before giving way to
Mack Celauro. She would finish the game with 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
The Devils were held scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when they scored three times. After base hits by
Megan Guidry and
Victoria Pauwels,
Alex Brizendine lifted a sacrifice fly to get Fredonia State on the board. Wandell doubled to score pinch runner
Isabella Rizzo. After a walk and a wild pitch, Wandell would score on a first-and-third steal of home.
SUNDAY
Game 1 vs. Simpson
Simpson scored a run in the top pf the first and two in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Fredonia State got on the board in the bottom of the second.
Singles by Guidry and Mezzoprete started the inning. A pair of bunts moved up both and scored Guidry to make it a 3-1 game.
Simpson scored five in the top of the third to take command of the game. Four walks, two hits, and two errors got Simpson its runs. They would tack on two more in the fifth to end the game. Celauro took the loss on the mound for Fredonia State, going 2 2/3 giving up eight runs, four earned. Galbraith finished the game, going 2 1/3 and surrendering one earned run.
Game 2 vs. Springfield
The game was tight with Springfield leading 1-0 through four-and-a-half innings. The Pride would erupt for five runs in the bottom of the fifth, then another pair in the bottom of the sixth.
Wandell was 2-2 with a walk for the Devils. Wulf had the Devils' other hit, and added a stolen base.
The Devils take on Bowdoin and Mount Saint Mary on Monday beginning at 2 p.m.
